Shutters for Sash Windows

Sash windows and plantation shutters are a natural pairing. Made-to-measure shutters follow the proportions of each sash, giving you precise control over privacy and light without hiding the character of the window.

Why shutters are ideal for sash windows

Sash windows were designed to be operated in halves, and plantation shutters mirror this perfectly. With a tier-on-tier configuration, each tier opens and tilts independently. You can keep the bottom half closed for privacy while opening the top tier for light and ventilation, exactly the way a sash window is meant to work.

Unlike curtains or blinds, shutters sit within the window reveal and do not obstruct the sash mechanism. You can still slide the sashes up and down freely, and the shutters stay neatly in place. This is particularly important in period homes where the window furniture and mouldings are part of the architectural character.

Tier-on-tier: the recommended style

For most sash windows, we recommend tier-on-tier shutters. These have two sets of panels, one above the other, each with its own hinges and tilt rod. This gives you four combinations of open and closed across the upper and lower sash, making them one of the most flexible window treatments available.

Full-height shutters with a mid-rail are another popular option. The mid-rail aligns with the meeting rail of the sash window, allowing independent tilt control of the upper and lower louvres while keeping the panels in a single frame. This gives a slightly cleaner look while retaining the split functionality.

Measuring considerations

Sash windows vary widely in size, depth, and condition. Older timber frames may not be perfectly square, and the depth of the reveal affects whether the shutters can be recessed inside the window or need to be face-fixed on the wall. Our surveyor checks all of this during a free home visit, measuring each window individually so the shutters fit precisely without interfering with the sash operation.

We also check clearances for window handles, sash locks, and any trickle vents. If your sash windows have deep reveals, the shutters can sit neatly inside. For shallower reveals, we use slim L-frames or face-fix the shutters to the surrounding wall to ensure a clean finish.

Perfect for Victorian and Georgian homes

Sash windows are a defining feature of Victorian, Georgian, and Edwardian architecture, and interior shutters were part of the original design in many of these properties. Installing plantation shutters restores that heritage character while adding modern functionality. Whether your sash windows are original timber or modern uPVC replacements, shutters enhance the look from both inside and outside the property.

For period homes, we often recommend a painted finish in white or off-white to complement the traditional window frames. Natural wood stains are also popular for properties with exposed timber features. Explore our white plantation shutters page for inspiration on colour options.

Key benefits of shutters on sash windows

  • Independent control of upper and lower tiers mirrors the sash operation.
  • Shutters sit within the reveal and do not interfere with sash movement.
  • Made-to-measure frames accommodate out-of-square period window openings.
  • Improve insulation by reducing draughts around older timber frames.
  • Restore the heritage look that was originally part of the building design.
  • No cords or chains, keeping period window sills clean and uncluttered.

Shutters for sash windows: what to know

Practical advice for fitting plantation shutters to single and double-hung sash windows.

Sash windows are one of the most common window types we fit shutters to across the UK. The vertical sliding mechanism means the window treatment needs to work in harmony with the sashes rather than block them, and plantation shutters do this better than almost any alternative.

Tier-on-tier is our most recommended style for sash windows because it gives you independent access to each half of the window. You can fold back the top tier completely while keeping the bottom closed, or tilt both tiers at different angles throughout the day.
