Shutters for French Doors and Patio Doors

Plantation shutters transform French doors and patio doors into a striking design feature while giving you full control over light, privacy, and access. Here is how they work on larger openings.

How shutters work on French doors

French door shutters are typically full-height panels mounted directly onto the door frame so they open and close with the door. This keeps the shutter and door as a single unit, meaning you never need to fold back the shutters before opening the doors. The louvres tilt for light and privacy control, while the door handles remain accessible through a custom cutout in the shutter frame.

For standard double French doors, we fit one shutter panel per door leaf. The panels are made to measure so they follow the exact proportions of the door, creating a clean and balanced look. We position the handle cutout precisely so you can operate the door without any obstruction.

Patio doors and wide openings

Sliding patio doors and bifold doors present a different challenge because of their width. For these larger openings, tracked shutters are usually the best solution. The shutter panels slide along a top-mounted or top-and-bottom track, stacking neatly to one or both sides when you want full access to the opening.

Tracked shutters are especially popular for wide patio doors and bifold doors that span two metres or more. The panels glide smoothly along the track without swinging into the room, which keeps the space practical. When closed, the louvres give you the same light and privacy control as any other plantation shutter.

Door clearance and handle cutouts

One of the most common concerns with door shutters is whether the handles and locks will still be accessible. We design every set of door shutters with a precise cutout for the handle, positioned during the survey so there is no interference with daily use. The cutout is finished cleanly and integrated into the panel design.

Clearance from the floor is another consideration. Door-mounted shutters need enough gap at the bottom to swing freely over carpet, tiles, or thresholds. Our surveyor checks this during the home visit and adjusts the panel dimensions to ensure smooth operation across any flooring.

Which style works best?

For standard French doors, full-height shutters mounted to the door are our most popular recommendation. They move with the door, so there is no need to fold anything back before stepping outside. A mid-rail can be added to split the tilt control between the upper and lower sections.

For sliding patio doors, bifold doors, and very wide openings, tracked shutters keep access practical and the look streamlined. The panels slide out of the way completely, and the track can be configured to stack panels to the left, right, or both sides depending on how you use the space.

Shutters for French doors and patio doors

Practical guidance for fitting plantation shutters to doors and wide openings.

French doors and patio doors are among the most rewarding windows to fit with shutters because the transformation is so visible. Glass doors dominate a room, and replacing curtains or vertical blinds with plantation shutters instantly elevates the space.

The key decision is whether to mount the shutters to the door itself or to the surrounding frame. Door-mounted shutters move with the door and require no extra step before opening, while frame-mounted or tracked panels are better suited to sliding and bifold doors.
