What the guarantee covers
A plantation shutter guarantee covers two things: the product and the installation. On the product side, the guarantee applies to manufacturing defects — warping, cracking, delamination, louvre mechanism failure, tilt rod breakage, or paint adhesion failure that occurs under normal domestic use. If any of these defects appear within the guarantee period, Shutters Factory will inspect, repair, or replace the affected component at no charge, with no call-out fee and no requirement to return the shutters to a depot.
On the installation side, the guarantee covers workmanship defects — frame fixings that loosen, hinges that fail due to incorrect fitting, or alignment problems that develop because of how the shutter was hung rather than how the building has moved. Both the structural timber or polymer components and the painted finish fall under the same guarantee term, as does the louvre mechanism — the component that sees the most daily movement over the product's service life. Our quality assurance and safety standards explain the tolerances and test procedures applied to every product before it leaves our factory.
How long does the guarantee last?
Guarantee terms vary by material, reflecting the inherent durability profile of each product. In 2026, the standard terms are as follows: composite shutters such as Mimeo composite carry a five-year guarantee from the date of installation; hardwood shutters including Endura hardwood also carry a five-year guarantee; and aluminium shutters such as Dura aluminium are guaranteed for ten years, reflecting the exceptional dimensional stability and corrosion resistance of extruded aluminium profiles.
The guarantee term begins on the fitting date — the day the shutters are installed and handed over, not the order date. If your installation is phased across two visits, each phase begins its guarantee term from its own fitting date. For the paulownia ranges including Strato paulownia, the same five-year guarantee applies as for other timber products. Paulownia is a stable hardwood that performs consistently in UK domestic environments, but the five-year period gives ample time to identify any material or workmanship issue that develops during the early service life of the shutters.
What the guarantee does not cover
Understanding the exclusions is as important as understanding what is included. Shutter guarantees are written for defects, not for damage, wear, or misuse. Accidental damage is not covered: a louvre cracked by an object hitting it, a panel warped by direct contact with a heat source such as a radiator, or hinge damage caused by a door being slammed onto the shutter frame. Damage caused by flooding, structural movement of the building, or the installation of adjacent fixtures after the shutters were fitted also falls outside the guarantee.
Cosmetic wear — minor surface scratches from normal use, slight yellowing of white paint in high-UV south-facing rooms after several years, or the natural variation in grain and colour of timber that develops with age — is excluded because these are characteristics of the materials rather than defects. For a full account of how shutter materials age in UK conditions, our long-term performance comparison of wood, composite, and aluminium shutters covers the technical differences by product type. Customer-initiated modifications are the third exclusion: if you repaint the shutters, alter the hinges, or cut a louvre, any defect that arises in the modified area is excluded, though unmodified components remain covered.
How to make a guarantee claim
Making a claim is straightforward. Contact Shutters Factory directly — by phone, email, or through the website — and describe the issue with as much detail as possible, including photographs of the defect and your installation date. A member of the team will assess whether the reported issue falls within the guarantee scope and arrange an inspection visit if the photographs are not conclusive.
If the inspection confirms a valid claim, Shutters Factory schedules a return visit to carry out the repair or replacement. For louvre mechanism issues and minor component failures, the repair is typically completed in a single visit. Panel replacements involve manufacturing the new component to the original specification and fitting it at a second appointment — typically within four to six weeks of the claim being confirmed. There is no insurance company or third-party claims handler involved: the claim runs directly between you and Shutters Factory, decided by people who understand the product. Why buying directly from a UK shutter manufacturer makes a difference explores this direct-relationship advantage in more detail.
Quality construction: why guarantee claims are rare
The best guarantee is one you never need to use. Shutters Factory's low claim rate reflects the manufacturing discipline applied before any panel leaves the factory. Timber is kiln-dried to a specific moisture content appropriate for UK domestic environments, minimising seasonal movement after installation. Joints are machine-cut to tolerances that prevent play at louvre pivot points. Primer and topcoat systems are applied in controlled conditions with each coat allowed to cure fully before the next is applied. For composite and aluminium products, the process is different but equally rigorous — louvres are checked for consistent density and extrusions are verified against profile specifications.
How plantation shutters are made from raw timber to installed product walks through each production stage, including the quality checks applied at every point. The installation itself is carried out by Shutters Factory's own trained fitters — not subcontractors — who are familiar with every frame type, window mechanism, and panel configuration in the range. A quality-made shutter installed correctly almost never generates a claim, and the results speak for themselves across the range of property types, materials, and window configurations shown in finished installations in our project gallery.
Moving home: does the guarantee transfer?
Shutters are a permanent fixture: when you sell your home, the shutters remain — and the guarantee transfers to the new owner for the remainder of its term. At Shutters Factory, the guarantee follows the property rather than the original purchaser, which means it can be referenced in conveyancing and communicated to buyers as a positive feature of the purchase. Estate agents in South West London and Surrey increasingly note the presence of an active shutter guarantee in property particulars, particularly for higher-value properties where buyers expect a premium standard of specification.
If you are planning to move before the guarantee expires, retain your original fitting documentation — the order confirmation, fitting date, and product specification — as this constitutes the guarantee record. Pass it to the buyer at completion so they have the information needed to make a claim without delay. For the full case on why plantation shutters are a sound long-term investment in your home, including the resale and rental value arguments, the detailed analysis covers every relevant angle.
Beyond the guarantee: long-term support
A guarantee defines the minimum commitment — but the relationship with Shutters Factory does not end when the period does. Servicing is available outside the guarantee term on a call-out basis: louvre adjustments, rehinging, cord replacement on solid-panel units, and cosmetic touch-ups can all be carried out by the original fitting team at a straightforward hourly rate. For large installations, a single visit typically resolves minor issues across multiple windows in the same appointment.
Starting the process right is the best long-term investment: a correctly specified, properly installed shutter on a healthy window requires little attention for the first decade. Book your free home survey to discuss which product is right for your windows, your rooms, and your long-term expectations — the surveyor will explain the exact guarantee terms for the products you are considering so you can compare them before committing to an order.
