Shaped Shutters for Arched and Angled Windows

How shaped shutters handle arches, angles, circles, and triangles — what they cost, how they're measured, and the practical limits to know before ordering.

Shaped Shutters for Arched and Angled Windows

Quick answer

Shaped shutters are made to follow non-rectangular windows — arches, circles, triangles, hexagons, and angled gables. Each shape is templated on site and built bespoke. Expect £550–£900 per m² supply-and-fit (40–60% more than a rectangular shutter of the same area). Lead times run 8–10 weeks because the panels cannot be batched.

What "shaped" shutter actually means

A shaped shutter follows the outline of a non-rectangular window. The frame and the panel are cut to match the window opening — arch, circle, half-moon, triangle, gable, hexagon, or any custom shape. The louvres inside the panel either fan out from a central pivot (sunburst pattern) or run horizontally with the panel edge cut to match.

Off-the-shelf shutters never work on shaped windows. Every shaped install is bespoke — the surveyor produces a precise template, and the manufacturer builds to that template from scratch. See examples in our shaped shutters range.

The shapes we install most often

In UK homes, the same handful of shapes come up again and again:

  • Arched (Romanesque) tops on Victorian and Edwardian sash windows
  • Half-moon (semi-circular) windows above doors or front porches
  • Circular and oval portholes on landings and bathrooms
  • Triangular gables in loft conversions and A-frame extensions
  • Angled (slanted) tops on dormer windows and roof-light reveals
  • Hexagonal and octagonal windows on conservatories and feature walls

Louvre layout — sunburst, horizontal, or fixed?

On an arched or circular shutter, the louvres can be set up three ways. Each gives a different look and a different level of light control:

  • Sunburst (fan): louvres radiate from a central pivot. The most striking look. Louvres tilt together with a single control. Best on large half-moons.
  • Horizontal: louvres run across the shape like a normal shutter. The end louvres are cut shorter to follow the curve. Easiest to operate.
  • Fixed (no tilt): louvres are locked at one angle for a decorative finish. Used on small portholes and pure-feature windows where light control does not matter.

How much do shaped shutters cost?

Bespoke templating and one-off manufacture push the price 40–60% above a rectangular shutter of the same area. For typical UK installs:

  • Small porthole (~0.4 m²): £280–£420 supply and fit
  • Half-moon over a door (~0.8 m²): £480–£720 supply and fit
  • Full arch-top sash window (~2 m²): £1,100–£1,800 supply and fit
  • Triangular gable (~3 m²): £1,500–£2,400 supply and fit
  • Most installs sit at £550–£900 per m², material-dependent

Lead times and templating

A shaped shutter cannot be batched with standard rectangular orders, so the manufacturing time is longer. Expect 8–10 weeks from survey to installation, versus 4–6 weeks for rectangular shutters.

The surveyor uses a digital template (or a card template on very irregular shapes) to capture the exact curve and angles. Half a degree of error on an arch shows as a visible gap, so the survey takes longer than a standard window — usually 45–60 minutes per opening.

Material choice for shaped shutters

Most shaped shutters in UK homes use painted hardwood (Endura) because hardwood cuts cleanly into curved shapes. Composite (Mimeo) works well on simpler shapes — half-moons, slanted tops, hexagons — but very tight curves (small portholes under 400 mm) are harder to manufacture in composite without visible joints.

Aluminium is rarely used for indoor shaped shutters because the material is more rigid and harder to form into curves cleanly.

Common pitfalls to avoid

Three things go wrong on shaped shutter projects when surveys are rushed or cheap installers cut corners:

  • Wrong template. An arch that is 1° off the true curve leaves a visible gap. Insist on a digital template or a card cut on site.
  • Top louvre too thin. On a fan-shaped sunburst, the louvres near the bottom of the fan become very narrow. Some manufacturers stop the louvres short and leave a solid bottom strip — looks neater than thin slivers of louvre.
  • Off-the-shelf "shaped" panels. Some online sellers offer standard arch sizes. They almost never match a real Victorian arch, which is rarely a true semicircle.

Is your window a candidate?

Almost any non-rectangular window can take a shaped shutter — but a few exceptions exist. Windows with very tight inner curves (<150 mm radius), or shapes where the louvre would need to be cut to less than 40 mm tall, may not work. The surveyor will tell you straight at the visit.

FAQs

Can you fit shutters to a circular window?

Yes. Circular and oval windows are templated and built bespoke. Louvres are usually set fixed (decorative) on small portholes and operable (tilting) on larger circles.

Are shaped shutters more expensive than rectangular ones?

Yes — typically 40–60% more per square metre because each one is bespoke and cannot be batched with standard production. Expect £550–£900 per m² supply-and-fit.

How long do shaped shutters take to make?

Lead times run 8–10 weeks from survey to installation, versus 4–6 weeks for standard rectangular shutters. The extra time is templating and bespoke manufacture.

Can the louvres still tilt on an arched shutter?

Yes — louvres tilt as normal on operable arched shutters. For a sunburst pattern, all louvres tilt together via a single hidden mechanism. For horizontal louvres in an arch, each louvre tilts individually.

Will a shaped shutter fit a Victorian arch that is not a true semicircle?

Yes — that is exactly what bespoke templating is for. Most Victorian arches are slightly flattened or rise to a point, and the shutter is cut to match the actual shape rather than a standard radius.
