Chelsea’s architecture and what it means for shutters
Chelsea is one of London’s densest concentrations of period architecture — Georgian squares around Cheyne Walk and Royal Hospital Road, Victorian terraces through World’s End and Lots Road, Edwardian mansion blocks on the Fulham Road, and post-war conversions interspersed throughout. Each building type brings different windows, and different windows need different shutter specifications.
Most Victorian and Georgian Chelsea windows are double-hung sash: tall, narrow, and set into deep reveals that take shutters beautifully. Edwardian mansion flats tend to have wider casements and tripartite windows. Contemporary riverside developments often have floor-to-ceiling glazing that calls for tracked or very wide hinged panels.
For most Chelsea period properties, full-height shutters in a warm white hardwood are the default — they suit tall sash windows, deep reveals, and the overall character of the architecture. For a deeper look at what works in Victorian and Edwardian London homes, see our guide to shutters for period London homes.
The most popular shutter styles in Chelsea
Based on what we install in SW3, SW10, and the surrounding postcodes, three styles make up the majority of Chelsea orders:
- Full height — the standard for Chelsea reception rooms, dining rooms, and front-of-house windows. One continuous panel per side with an optional mid-rail to split louvre tilt. Works on both narrow sash windows and wide bay fronts. See full-height shutters.
- Bay window shutters — a large proportion of Chelsea terraces have a projecting bay on the ground floor. Mitred frames, full-height panels, and a heritage-white finish give the correct period look and feel. See bay window shutters for style and fitting details.
- Tier-on-tier — popular in Chelsea bedrooms and in first-floor rooms that face the street directly. The bottom half stays shut for privacy while the top half opens independently for morning light and ventilation.
Material guide for Chelsea properties
Three materials cover virtually every Chelsea situation. The right choice depends on the room, the building type, and how the property is used.
Painted hardwood (Endura) is the most popular material across Chelsea. Endura wood shutters accept a custom paint match, so you can align them to existing skirting boards, architraves, or window frames — important in period rooms where the shutters become part of the interior architecture rather than an addition to it. Most Chelsea living rooms and dining rooms use hardwood as their first choice.
Composite (Mimeo) is the sensible default for Chelsea basement flats, kitchens, bathrooms, and any room that gets condensation from poor ventilation. Mimeo composite shutters are completely waterproof, wipe clean easily, and cost less than hardwood — which matters when a basement conversion has six or more windows to dress. Composite is also the practical choice for Chelsea rental properties where long-term durability and low maintenance are priorities.
Aluminium (Dura) suits Chelsea homes with very wide glazed openings, garden-level patio doors, or converted warehouse and office-to-residential spaces. Dura aluminium shutters span panels up to 1.2 m wide without sagging, and they are rated for exterior use — which matters for properties with doors opening directly onto a courtyard or roof terrace.
How much do shutters cost in Chelsea?
Shutter pricing is driven by window size and material, not by postcode. A 1.2 m × 1.4 m window costs the same in SW3 as it does in Streatham. What does affect the final price in Chelsea is the complexity of the window type — bay angles, deep reveals, and security glazing all add to the install.
- Standard flat sash window: from £380 per m² (composite, supply and fit) to £650 per m² (hardwood)
- Bay window: add 10–20% for mitre joints and angular frame work
- Basement windows with security glazing: frames may need adapters — allow £80–£150 extra per opening
- Wide patio or bi-fold doors: from £450 per m² on tracked aluminium, full supply and fit
- Shaped or arched tops (common on Victorian Chelsea sashes): from £550 per m²
Lead times from survey to installation in Chelsea
All Shutters Factory products are UK-manufactured, which gives predictable lead times rather than the uncertainty of imported panels. Once you approve your quote, manufacture begins immediately.
Typical Chelsea lead times are: composite shutters 4–6 weeks from survey to installation; hardwood shutters 6–8 weeks; shaped or arched shutters (fairly common on Victorian Chelsea sashes) 8–10 weeks; tracked aluminium for patio or bi-fold doors 6–8 weeks. Installation for most Chelsea rooms is a single half-day — a typical Victorian terrace lounge with two or three windows is done in three to four hours.

What the Chelsea survey covers
Chelsea period homes bring specific survey challenges: window reveals in buildings that have settled over 100–150 years are rarely perfectly square, timber frames have often been painted and re-painted many times adding depth to the reveal, and bay windows carry non-standard angles that must be measured precisely.
At the survey, we measure every opening, check reveal depth and any obstructions (radiators, architraves, window boards), confirm how shutters will mount to the frame, and photograph every window. You receive a fixed written quote within 48 hours covering panels, frames, hardware, delivery, and installation — nothing is added later.
