What are cafe style shutters?
Inspired by the half-shuttered windows of European cafes, cafe style shutters cover only the lower section of a window. The top half is left bare, flooding the room with natural light while the bottom panels screen out passers-by.
This style is particularly popular in ground-floor living rooms, kitchens, and front-facing bedrooms where full-window coverage would make the room feel dark.
When cafe style shutters are the right choice
Choose cafe style shutters when privacy is your main concern but you do not want to sacrifice light. They work beautifully on street-facing sash windows, cottage windows, and bay windows where the upper glass captures sky views.
If you need full coverage for bedrooms or media rooms, consider full height shutters instead, or combine cafe style with a sheer fabric across the top.
Cost advantage
Because cafe style shutters use less material and require fewer panels, they are among the most affordable shutter styles. They are an excellent entry point for homeowners testing whether shutters suit their interior before committing to a whole-house installation.
